COCHRAN, GA - Softball dropped a pair of games on Saturday and 3 out of 4 in the series against Bethel University. Game 1 was a 5-3 win for the Wildcats and game 2 went 4-3 in 8 innings. The losses put the Knights at 18-10 on the season and 7-3 in SSAC play.
Game 1 saw the Knights strike first with a run in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Madison Bivins. The Wildcats answered in the top of the 4th with 4 runs on 3 hits including a 3-run home run by Jezabelle Quintana. The lead was extended to 5-1 in the 5th with a run on a hit by the Wildcats. After Ny'Asia Howard singled and stole second, Margaret Simmons singled through the 5.5 hole to score Howard and cut the lead to 5-2. The Knights did not score again until a solo home run by Maggie Burkhalter in the bottom fo the 7th cut the lead to 5-3 but that was it for the Knights. Caroline Newton took the loss going all 7 innings with 6 strike outs while allowing 8 hits and 2 walks with 5 earned runs and a record of 7-5.
Game 2's result was not any better but took extra innings to decide. The Knights fell behind 3-0 with the Wildcats scoring a run in the 2nd and a pair on Quintana's second home run of the day in the 3rd. The Knights got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd as Howard doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Bivins. In the 5th the Knights scored again as Bivins led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Newton to trail 3-2 after 5. The Knights tied the game in the 5th as Bivins doubled to score Simmons but was stranded on 2nd. The Knights stranded the winning run at 2nd in the 7th as well but the Wildcats got a run on a pair of hits and an error in the top of the 8th to take a 4-3 lead. The Knights got two runners on but stranded both in the bottom of the 8th to lose by a final of 4-3. Sydney Shackelford pitched all 8.0 innings allowing 3 earned runs, 11 hits, and no walks while striking out 3 as her record went to 8-3.
The Knights will host Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday at 3PM in Cochran for their next game the on the road to the University of Mobile for a 4-game series on March 29 and 30.
