MOUNT VERNON, GA - The softball team took a pair of games in SSAC play from the Brewton-Parker College Barons 5-2 in game 1 and 5-3 in game 2. The Knights trailed both games 2-1 scoring 4 runs in the top of the 7th of game 1 and 3 in the top of the 5th of game 2 to get the wins. With the wins, the Knights move to 17-7 on the season and 6-0 in SSAC play.
In game 1, the Knights fell behind in the 3rd as the Barons scored a run and the Knights tied it up in the top of the with an RBI double by Lauren Heath. The Barons took the lead back in the bottom of the 5th and led 2-1 till the top of the 7th. With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, an RBI single by Brittany Wilt tied the game at 2. Ny'Asia Howard doubled home the go-ahead run followed by a 2-run single from Madison Bivins to give the Knights a 5-2 lead. Caroline Newton stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the 7th to get the win. Newton struck out 5 batters over 7 innings with 0 walks.
Game 2 had the Knights strike first with an RBI for Meagan Coleman on an error and the Barons got 2 runs on a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning for the 2-1 lead. The Barons extended the lead to 3-1 in the 4th on 3 hits but left 2 on. The Knights answered with 3 in the 5th as Bivins had another 2-run single and Margaret Simmons doubled home the 3rd run for a 4-3 lead. The Knights got an insurance run in the 7th as Howard scored on an error by the secondbaseman off the bat of Newton. Shackelford gave up a hit but no runs in the 7th to complete the win. She threw 7 innings with 2 strike outs, a walk, and surrendered 10 hits and 3 earned runs.
The Knights host SSAC opponent Bethel University on Friday the 22nd and Saturday the 23rd for a doubleheader each day.
