MOBILE, AL - The 17-seed Knights men's tennis opened their NAIA National Tournament play with a 6-3 win over the 16-seed Tennessee Wesleyan squad on Tuesday setting up a match on Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM against #1-seed Georgia Gwinnett College. The Knights took all 3 doubles matches then #5 and #2 singles to close the match out 5-0 but completed the rest of the matches on the court for the 6-3 win.
The doubles team of Octavio Tamola (SO/Buenos Aires) and Alvaro Conesa (SO/Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) finished their match first at #3 doubles winning 8-2 followed by the #1 doubles of Nishanth Rebello (JR/ Bangalor, India) and Masao Perret (FR/Neuchâtel, Switzerland) taking their match 8-2 for the 2-0 lead in the overall. Colby Gandy (SO/Waynesboro, Ga) and Jordan Clayton (JR/England) finished the #2 doubles in a closer match at 8-6 to put the Knights up 3-0 headed to the singles matches.
Conesa was the first of the singles to finish in the #5 spot taking his match 6-0, 6-1 then Tamola finished next with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the #2 spot to clinch the win for the team. Gandy was the next to finish losing 6-2, 6-3 in the #3 spot and Alejandro Prada (SO) fell next at #6 by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Rebello was the next to last to complete his match at the #1 spot with a 7-6, 6-2 victory to put the team up 6-2. Perret was the final match to finish in the overall at the #4 spot that went 3 sets in a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 loss but still an overall win for the team.
The Knights will face #1 seed Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM. The two teams did not play last year but GGC won both meetings in the prior two seasons.
